Grotesque characters, delirious landscapes, whirling rhythms. The world of Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg storms into the rooms of the Mart, the second stage of a project that also involves Moderna Museet and Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt. This is the most extensive exhibition ever to take place devoted to the famous duo, winners of the Leone d’Argento at the 2009 Venice Biennale.

Djurberg has exhibited at the most important international institutions, including Tate Britain, P.S.1 in New York, Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, 21st Century Minsheng Art Museum in Shanghai and Fondazione Prada in Milan. She has been collaborating for years now with Berg, musician, producer and composer. Their work takes the form of large immersive installations, genuine landscapes of the absurd populated with people, animals and plants interpreting the drives and contradictions of the human mind.

The exhibition presents environments and animations, the result of a practice that is above all sculptural and painterly. With clay Djurberg creates characters and sets that then come to life through the movie technique of stop motion and Berg’s soundtracks. Between irony and paradox, the two artists stage cutting allegories that explore the most visceral feelings without judgement, subverting stereotypes and genre categories.
